Oakes hauls in another NCAC weekly award

CLEVELAND -- Currently playing in the NCAA Fall Preview in Florida, Kenyon College junior Jonathan Oakes was recognized for his showing in last week's Gate City Invitational. On Tuesday, the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) named Oakes its winner of the Athlete of the Week award.

At the Gate City Invitational, a three-round round tournament at Forest Oaks Country Club and hosted by Greensboro College, Oakes scored a one-over 73 in the first round. He then followed that with a three-under 69 in the second round and an even-par 72 in the third and final round.

Oakes' overall stroke count of 214 placed him eighth among 96 golfers and he was just one stroke shy of tying for a top-five spot. His individual efforts went a long way in helping the Kenyon team place eighth in the field of 18 teams, many of which were nationally-ranked.

During play in the Invitational, the Owls were ranked at No. 12 in the Golf Coaches Association of America Bushnell/Golfweek DIII Coaches Poll. A few days later, following the results of the Invitational, the Owls were bumped up to No. 10.

The weekly conference award marks the first time Oakes gained the honor the season, but the fourth time in his Kenyon career.
