Owls bested by Beavers in first road test

BLUFFTON, Ohio – After a tough slate of competition last weekend at the Great Lakes Crossover tournament, the Kenyon College volleyball team had its first true road contest of 2025, taking on Bluffton University on Wednesday night.

Despite amassing some of the best hitting percentage numbers of the year thus far, the Owls could not contain the Beavers, falling in straight sets 3-0.

Kenyon's (0-4) best statistical set of the night came in the second, amassing a .225 hitting percentage with a game high 13 kills and just four attack errors. Bluffton (3-2) got off to the better start in the second, taking a 12-8 lead nearing the midpoint.

The Beavers went up 22-19 late in the set, but a 5-0 run from the Owls gave the team the lead at 24-22 with the set on the line. After a kill from Juliette Tomamichel got the party started, the visitors forced four straight attack errors, all by balls from Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese. Down the stretch, however, Bluffton took five of six points to win the second set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Back in set one, Kenyon again had a strong hitting percentage, this time at .214, and built a lead early. Kills from Rumpca-Veronese, Rachel Ferrara and Becca Gwynne added to an ace from Joy Carstanjen that saw the Owls take a 9-6 lead out of the gates. Bluffton rattled off a 4-0 run later in the set to tie the score and never looked back, taking set one 25-19.

Olivia Gumz shined in the third set, one where the Owls had ten kills at a .207 hitting percentage. Gumz had half of those kills to help Kenyon build a 5-3 lead early on, but it wasn't enough to beat the Beavers, falling in the third 25-20 and the match 3-0.

Gumz led the Owls with 12 kills and a .444 hitting percentage, while Rumpca-Veronese and Tomamichel tied at five. Hannah Schwemm dished out 24 assists on the night and led the team with 13 digs, while Rumpca-Veronese had two blocks on the defensive end.

Kenyon will head back to Gambier for a home-opening doubleheader on Saturday, September 6, taking on Franciscan University at 12:00 pm and Kalamazoo College at 4:00 pm from Tomisch Arena.
