Game Recap: Volleyball |

Owls split a pair of five-set matches

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Playing at home for the first time this season, the Kenyon College volleyball team hosted a tri-match with Franciscan University and Kalamazoo College. The Owls outlasted Franciscan, 3-2, but wound up on the other side of that same score against Kalamazoo during play at Tomsich Arena on Saturday.

Kalamazoo ended up winning both of its matches to improve to 4-2, Fransican's two losses dropped the Barons to 1-4, and Kenyon's split put the Owls at 1-5.

In the day's first match, Kenyon and Franciscan traded sets. The Barons went up 1-0 and 2-1, but each time Kenyon answered to even things up. In the deciding fifth set, Franciscan got ahead 13-10, but Kenyon, again, would not be counted out. Three kills from Olivia Gumz, paired with two Franciscan attack errors, put the Owls ahead 15-14.

Franciscan logged the next point, but gave the lead away on a service error. Joy Carstanjen then cemented the win for the Owls with an ace. It was one of 14 aces throughout the match for Kenyon.

Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese and Hannah Schwemm both had big games against the Barons. Rumpca-Veronese tallied seven aces and a team-best 18 kills. Schwemm came through with a team-high 48 assists, one shy of her career best, and 19 digs. Gumz finished with 13 kills and was one of four Kenyon players that notched a double-digit kill total. Lauren Blakemore edged Schwemm in digs, as she led the team with 20.

After Franciscan and Kalamazoo played the day's second match, Kenyon got back on the court to face the Hornets in a match of equally-skilled teams. In fact, the match was so close that four of five sets were decided by two points and, at no time throughout the entire match, did any team lead by more than four points.

The Hornets took the first set by three points and, like the first match, Kenyon traded wins, taking the second and fourth set by two points, with a two-point, third-set loss in between.

The fifth set was tight until Kalamazoo broke free with a five point run that turned a 9-7 deficit into a 12-9 lead. Kenyon, as it did all day, charged back with its own five-point swing. The Owls' run was fueled by two kills from Rumpca-Veronese, one from Gumz, and an ace from Carstanjen.

The Hornets scored the next two points and then Rumpca-Veronese threw down another kill to push the Owls to a 15-14 advantage. That, however, was the last Kenyon point. An Owls' error, followed by two Kalamazoo kills, sealed the deal for the Hornets.

Gumz led the team in kills with 20 against the Hornets. Schwemm tacked on another 43 assists and Blakemore racked up 23 digs. At the net, Sophia Menke had six blocks and on the end line, Carstanjen, who had three aces in the first match, whipped up four more in the second.

Kenyon now has a short break from competition and will play next Friday and Saturday in Earlham College's Dr. Bill Brandes Memorial Invitational.
