Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Marian slips by Kenyon with overtime goal

GAMBIER, Ohio -- For 60 minutes on Sunday, the Kenyon College and Marian University field hockey teams played an even game on The Field at Benson Bowl. Marian, however, gained an edge early in overtime, and dealt the host Owls a 1-0 defeat.

That overtime goal crossed the Kenyon line just a little more than two minutes into the extra frame. With the Sabres possessing the ball for most of that time, Kenyon was able to clear the ball after a Marian penalty corner. When the Sabres brought the ball back up field, they worked the right side and got the ball to Charlotte Touw. She broke free on the end line and snapped in the game-winner with a back-handed shot.

Throughout regulation, things went back-and-forth with very few scoring chances. Marian outshot Kenyon 16-12 through those first 60 minutes of play and it held a slight 11-8 edge in penalty corners, as well.

Junior Maren Lawrence led the Kenyon attack with three shots, two of which were on goal. One was saved by Marian goalkeeper Tamar Molenaar in the second quarter and the other was stopped on a defensive save from Roos van Kerkhoven in the third quarter.

Molenaar wound up making three saves for the Sabres, while Kenyon's combo of Sofia Chaves and Lucy Baker made six saves. Baker got the start in goal for Kenyon and played about 47 minutes, making three saves. Chaves played the fourth quarter and also made three saves.

The Owls will return to action on Saturday, when they host Sewanee in a noon game on The Field at Benson Bowl. Since 2010, the teams met just twice, with Kenyon claiming victory both times.
