Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Owls strike first, but Tigers take the game

GAMBIER, Ohio – Playing in its final home contest before kicking off a four game road trip, the Kenyon College field hockey team took on Sewanee College on Saturday afternoon from the Field at Benson Bowl.

Before the game, parents and fans joined together to honor the 2025 senior class, which included defender Riley Chlupsa

Although the Owls took an early lead thanks to a nice passing play tapped home by Abby Golub, the team could not counter the Tigers attack in the end, falling 3-1 after 60 minutes.

Kenyon (0-5) broke through for the game's first score near the end of the opening quarter. The play started with Zady Hasse, who took control of a loose ball over midfield and fired a pass to the low corner to Rigby Zentner. The junior slotted a pass to Maren Lawrence, who quickly swept the ball along to Golub, who made no mistake and tapped in the goal at 8:56 in the first.

Sewanee (2-4) quickly responded with a goal of its own, capitalizing off of a turnover in the Owls' defensive zone right in front of starting goalkeeper Lucy Baker. The quarter ended tied at one, but just before halftime, the Tigers again found the back of the box to take a 2-1 lead.

Baker exited the game at the half with three saves and was replaced by Sofia Chaves, who held down a scoreless third quarter as Kenyon tried to find the equalizer. However, the team failed to register any shots in the period, leaving 15 minutes remaining to make something happen.

The Owls' best chance to score in the fourth came from Ella Adamec, who just missed the net on a tough chance. The Tigers continued to stress the defense, forcing Chaves to make four saves in the final period, and finally broke through with less than a minute remaining to seal the 3-1 defeat.

Sewanee held an edge in shots 20-5 and penalty corners 11-3. Lawrence led Kenyon in shots with two, while Golub's goal was her first of the season.

Up next, the Owls will embark on the aforementioned four game road trip, getting underway on Tuesday, September 16 at 7:00 p.m. against Oberlin for the North Coast Athletic Conference opener.
