Kenyon men log season sweep of OWU

DELAWARE, Ohio -- Will McDonald delivered in the first half, Jackson Burke was nearly unstoppable in the second half, and Marius Mazeika was consistent throughout Wednesday night's game, as the Kenyon College men's basketball team posted a 69-61 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) victory over the host Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University.

The win gave the visiting Owls their first two-game, regular-season sweep of Ohio Wesleyan since the 1994-95 season. It also moved Kenyon back over the .500 mark at 10-9 overall. With just six games left in the season, the Owls now sit in sixth place in the conference standings with a 4-6 mark.

Scoring was not easy to come by in the first half of play, but McDonald, a first-year who earned the first start of his collegiate career, buried four three-pointers in his first 18 minutes of play. He opened the game for Kenyon with a three, then added another about four minutes later.

Burke and Mazeika then went to work and built Kenyon's lead to five points, at 13-8, but things then stalled for the Owls, who went scoreless for the next five minutes. That drought allowed Ohio Wesleyan to reclaim the lead, but never by more than two points.

Over the last six minutes of the half, McDonald knocked down two more three-balls and got Kenyon into the break with a 32-28 lead.

In the second half, Burke took over. The Battling Bishops did manage to close within two points, but with 15:27 left in the game, Burke connected on a three-pointer that kept Kenyon in front the rest of the way.

The Owls bumped their lead up to as many as 12 points on three different occasions, as Burke and Mazeika combined for 25 points over those final 20 minutes. Ohio Wesleyan eventually chipped the margin down to four with about a minute to go, but Kenyon converted its last six free throws to secure the win.

McDonald added one more long ball in the second half and finished the game with 16 points, as well as six rebounds. Burke also had 16 points, on 6-of-8 shooting. Additionally, he stuffed his stat line with team-highs of nine rebounds, five assists, and three blocked shots. Mazeika, who had seven points in the first half, concluded the contest with a game-high 20 points and matched McDonald's rebound total of six.

Although the Owls' struggles on the offensive boards continue, they did manage to keep the overall team rebounding outputs close. Despite just three offensive boards against OWU, Kenyon came up just short in a 39-35 battle of the boards.

The Kenyon defense, with 32 rebounds, held Ohio Wesleyan to just 32.3 percent (20-of-62) shooting for the game. The Battling  Bishops (6-13, 3-7 NCAC) were led by Jessee Battle, who had 15 points, and by Peyton Frey, who posted 11 points and 11 rebounds.
