Owls take two against Bethany and Olivet

GAMBIER, Ohio — The Kenyon College volleyball team earned two victories Saturday at Tomsich Arena, rallying past Bethany College in five sets and sweeping the University of Olivet in three.

The Owls opened the day with a 3-2 victory over Bethany before closing out the doubleheader with a 3--0 win against Olivet.


Against Bethany, Olivia Gumz led Kenyon with 18 kills, while Sophia Menke added 10. Hannah Schwemm recorded 35 assists, and Arianna Flota paced the defensive effort with 20 digs.


Kenyon established control early, taking the opening set 25-16. Bethany responded with a 25-22 win in the second, but the Owls regained the advantage with another 25-22 victory in the third set.


The Bison forced a deciding fifth set with a 25-21 win in the fourth. Kenyon responded in the final frame, using timely offensive plays to pull away and secure the 15-11 victory.


The Owls carried that momentum into their matchup with Olivet, where Menke led the way with 10 kills on 15 attempts for a .600 hitting percentage. Gumz added nine kills, and Bryn Carrigan contributed eight. Schwemm finished with 29 assists and four service aces.


The opening set against the Comets was a tight contest. After the teams battled to a 27-27 tie, Kenyon secured the final two points to claim a 29-27 win.


The Owls then found their rhythm offensively in the second set, hitting .324 on their way to a 25-21 victory. Kenyon completed the sweep with a 25-20 win in the third set.


Kenyon finished the day with two victories, showing resilience in a five-set battle against Bethany before closing the doubleheader with a straight-set win over Olivet.


Kenyon will return to action on Tuesday, October 13, at Ohio Wesleyan University for NCAC play.
