Kenyon tallies NCAC win at Transylvania

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A 3-0 win Saturday night at Transylvania University evened out the Kenyon College field hockey team's record at 4-4 for the season. More importantly, the win kept the Owls undefeated through their first three North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) contests.

The Owls controlled the game from the start against the Pioneers, who fell to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in NCAC play. The Kenyon women racked up a huge 13-3 advantage in shots taken, despite being edged in penalty corners, 7-6.

The scoring started in the game's sixth minute, as sophomore Hendrika Maher broke free in front of the cage. She, however, lost her balance trying to shoot and Transylvania goalkeeper Graci Adcock saved the attempt. The rebound off Adcock's pad went right to the stick of senior Gigi Johnson, who fired it over the goal line.

In the second quarter, the Owls scored twice in a span of just under five minutes. With 9:37 left in the quarter, Kenyon was awarded a penalty stroke. Senior Casey Master lined that one up and quickly tallied her fourth goal of the season to put Kenyon ahead 2-0.

Shortly after that, with 4:48 left in the second quarter, Maher got loose behind the Transylvania defense again. This time she took the ball down the left side and smacked a centering pass to Johnson, who buried her second goal of the game and her third of the season.

Kenyon starting goalkeeper Sofia Chaves, a junior, played the first half and made two saves. In the second half, first-year Kaitlyn Nowinski entered play and went untested for the final 30 minutes.

The Owls stay on the road Sunday, heading to Springfield, Ohio to take on the Wittenberg University Tigers, who are 4-5 overall and 3-2 in NCAC action.
