SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - -
Ella Adamec scored a second-half goal, but the Kenyon College field hockey team suffered its first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) loss of the season, falling to 4-1 on the road against Wittenberg University on Sunday afternoon.
The Owls fell behind early as Wittenberg struck twice in the opening period off penalty corner opportunities. The host Tigers jumped ahead 1-0 just 53 seconds into the match, with the deficit expanding with a goal in the closing minute of the first quarter to fall behind 2-0.
Kenyon pushed back in the second frame, generating opportunities with shots on goal from
Caroline Calello and
Casey Master, but with the Tiger goalie making saves to keep the Owls scoreless at halftime.
Wittenberg gained firm control early in the third period with two more goals, including a penalty stroke in the 36th minute, stretching the deficit to 4-0. However, Adamec provided a spark for Kenyon later in the quarter, breaking through in the 41st minute to put the Owls on the board. Kenyon kept the pressure on in the closing minutes of the third, drawing consecutive penalty corners and adding shots from
Maren Lawrence, Calello, and Adamec.
The Owls will look to bounce back when they continue NCAC play next week October 7, away at Ohio Wesleyan University
