Kenyon shuts out Ohio Wesleyan, 3-0

DELAWARE, Ohio — The Kenyon College field hockey team shut out Ohio Wesleyan University 3-0 Wednesday at Selby Stadium, with Hendrika Maher scoring twice in the third quarter to help the Owls pull away.

Kenyon improved to 5-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while Ohio Wesleyan fell to 9-3, 3-2.

Maren Lawrence opened the scoring with 22 seconds remaining in the first quarter, converting a feed from Ella Adamec to give Kenyon a 1-0 lead.

Neither team scored in the second quarter, and Kenyon carried its one-goal advantage into halftime despite Ohio Wesleyan holding a 7-4 edge in penalty corners through the opening 30 minutes.

The Owls broke the game open in the third quarter.

Maher scored at 40:39 to double Kenyon's lead. Casey Master put a shot on goal moments earlier, forcing Ohio Wesleyan goalkeeper Payton Mindel to make a save before Maher found the back of the cage.

Maher struck again just 2 minutes and 25 seconds later. After a Kenyon penalty corner, Master again put a shot on goal that Mindel saved before Maher scored at 43:04 to make it 3-0.

Kenyon's defense and goalkeeper Sofia Chaves kept the Battling Bishops off the scoreboard throughout the final quarter. Chaves finished with six saves, including three in the fourth quarter, to record the shutout.

Ohio Wesleyan generated six fourth-quarter shots and four penalty corners but couldn't solve Chaves. Emma Reynolds had two late shots on goal, while Chaves also stopped attempts from Mary Powers and Mattison Hyland in the final two minutes.

Maher finished with two goals on two shots, while Lawrence added one goal. Master recorded three shots, including two on goal. Adamec was credited with an assist on Lawrence's opening goal.

Ohio Wesleyan finished with a 16-8 advantage in shots and a 12-3 edge in penalty corners, but Kenyon converted its opportunities when it mattered most.

Kenyon goalkeeper Chaves played all 60 minutes and made six saves, while Mindel made two saves for Ohio Wesleyan.

Kenyon will return to action Saturday, Oct. 10, when it travels to Allegheny College for an NCAC match up.
