Unforced errors knock Owls out of sync

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College volleyball team could not find a groove Wednesday evening and wound up dropping a 3-0 home match to the Golden Eagles of Kent State University at Tuscarawas.

The Golden Eagles improved to 19-2 overall with the 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 non-conference result. On the other side of the court, the host Owls fell to 5-13, suffering their fourth straight defeat.

Things did not get off to a great start for Kenyon and that proved to foreshadow the rest of the match. After a quick 2-2 tie in the first set, Kent State rattled off five straight points, three of which were scored on Kenyon attack errors.

To its credit, Kenyon battled back, closing within 14-13 and 16-15, but down the stretch, errors proved to be Kenyon's downfall. Two service errors and one more attack error paved the way for the Golden Eagles to close out the set.

In set two, the Owls struggled on both ends of the serve game. Kent State posted six service aces, while Kenyon had a pair of service errors. With the ball in play, Lauren Doane and Allie Snyder took over, pacing the Golden Eagles attack through a 13-2 run. Although Kenyon hung tough, the set ended in similar fashion to the first. With Kent State ahead 22-21, Kenyon registered a service error, then gave up an ace, and dropped the final point on an attack error.

That staggered process of committing errors and then trying to recuperate from them took its toll on the Owls during the third set, as well. The Golden Eagles moved from a 6-6 tie to a 12-8 lead. They maintained their distance from that point and the final nine-point margin was their largest of the match. Kent State logged 16 kills in the third set, while Kenyon tallied just five after putting up 11 and 12, respectively, in the first two sets.

Kent State's Morgan Schlabach was the overall kill leader on the day. She racked up 15 in 33 attempts. Snyder finished with 10 and Doane had seven.

Kenyon was led by nine kills from Olivia Gumz and seven from Abby Stenger. Hannah Schwemm delivered 22 assists, Arianna Flota had eight digs, and Sophia Menke had one solo block, as well as four assisted blocks.

Kenyon will try to bounce back on Saturday, when it hosts a tri-match with Bethany College and The University of Olivet.
