Owls start season with doubleheader sweep

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Kenyon College Owls had a strong start to the 2026 baseball season, opening the schedule with a doubleheader sweep on the road Saturday. The Owls travelled south to take on Johnson & Wales University and they could not have asked for a much better start to the year, posting a 9-0 game-one shutout before pulling away late to clinch the sweep with a 9-3 game-two victory.

The Owls still have to wait more than a month before their scheduled home opener in Gambier, but Kenyon looked right at home at CaroMont Health Park. The Owls found multiple ways to score in game one, needing just eight hits to pile up nine runs in seven innings of play. Senior Ben Zimmerman got the scoring started in the second inning after coming around on an error, and junior Tyler Nee doubled the lead with an RBI single later in the frame.

Niko Price put another run on the board with a single swing in the third inning, and his home run was the first of two hits and three RBIs for the senior. An RBI walk from Price and a two-RBI single from Ben Resnick helped the Owls score three more in the sixth frame, and they matched that with a three-run seventh inning that featured an RBI from first-year Cade Leik, another Zimmerman score on a passed ball, and an RBI single from Price. Price led the team with three RBIs, Zimmerman and first-year Aaron Moss tied for the team lead with three runs apiece, and both Price and Zimmerman had a multi-hit game.

Kenyon's pitching was sharp in the season opener, with senior starter Theo Canning setting the tone. The two-time All-Conference performer earned the win with four scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out two Wildcats. Peyton Hodges, a junior, handled the rest of the work on the mound, putting together a stellar three-inning relief appearance to earn his second career save. Hodges struck out five in three frames while allowing just one hit.

The Owls carried their momentum into game two, quickly jumping ahead with two runs in the first inning thanks to RBIs from Nee and Price. The lead grew to 3-0 in the second inning after Gio Giuliani worked a bases-loaded walk.

The Wildcats worked their way back, scoring their first run of the day in the bottom of the second inning. JWU pieced together a couple more RBI hits in the next frame, tying things up 3-3 in the bottom of the third inning.

Kenyon kept its composure and held off the comeback effort, and a Ben Russell leadoff homer in the fifth inning put the Owls back on top. The one-run lead lasted until the final frame, when the Owls all but locked up the win with a four-run outburst.

Matt Ardell, Zimmerman, Leik, and Nee put together four straight Owls at-bats with at least one RBI, with Nee's two-RBI single putting the eighth and ninth runs on the board.

Jack Briscoe locked down the win, striking out the side to secure the sweep. The sophomore did the same in the sixth inning, tallying strikeouts against each of the six batters he faced.

The teams will run it back tomorrow at noon. Kenyon will be looking to start the season with a 3-0 record, while the Wildcats will be looking to get in the win column after an 0-5 start to their slate.
