Owls drop twin bill to Colonels to start 2026

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Kenyon College softball team opened the 2026 campaign on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader on the road against Centre College, the first two of four games to start the season.

Despite taking a big lead in game one and being tied early in game two, the Owls could not close out either contest, falling 11-12 in game one and 3-12 in game two.

Kenyon came out hot in game one, scoring the contest's first seven runs in three innings. Brooke Avila got the party started in the top of the fist, driving in Leah Schlissberg with a single to center. Leah Kuban finished off the big first frame with a two run single, scoring Avila and Lily Colvin

The Owls added another run in the second inning when Keala Montgomery's leadoff triple paid off when Schissberg sent her home. Two more runs in the third came by way of a Kuban RBI single and a bases loaded walk that sent Kinsey White home to give the visitors their big lead.

Izzy Akin got the start for opening day, pitching four innings with six hits, four runs and four strikeouts. After scoring twice in the third, the Colonels came close to tying the game in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to set the score at 7-6.

Kenyon expanded its lead again to five runs in the top of the sixth inning, where Maeve McLaughlin's single brought in Colvin before Madison Buckwalter smoked a double which scored Kuban, Emma Cashell and Peyton Green. Those would end up being the last runs scored in the game for the Owls, as Centre rattled off back to back three run innings in the sixth and seventh to take the game 12-11.

In game two, the Colonels got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. The Owls responded with a run of their own in the top of the second, where Kuban had an RBI groundout to score Avila. Kylie Hamm got her first start of the season, pitching three innings with eight runs and four strikeouts.

Centre came back with a 7-0 run in the next two innings to balloon its lead to 8-1. Schlissberg scored Green on a fielders choice in the top of the fourth, and McLaughlin scored Colvin on the next batter to make it 8-3, but those would be Kenyon's last runs of the second game. The Colonels went on to score four more runs to secure the second game 12-3 and the doubleheader sweep.

Kuban led all Owls with four RBIs for the day, while five different hitters tied for the team lead for the day with two. Hamm and Akin, the team's two starting pitchers, each twirled four strikeouts in their appearances, while Becca Boue led the relievers with one.

The Owls will be back tomorrow with another double header, taking on Berea College at 11:00 a.m. and Centre College again at 1:00 p.m. from Danville.
