Owls drop a pair of one-run games to Comets

BEXLEY, Ohio -- Maintaining leads in both of Wednesday's softball games at Capital University, the Kenyon College Owls couldn't hold off the host Comets, who scored runs in their final at-bats to claim victories by scores of 9-8 and 5-4.

The two losses evened out Kenyon's overall season record at 7-7, while the Comets climbed to 7-5.

Aided by a couple of Capital errors, the Kenyon offense put crooked numbers on the board in each of the first two innings of game one. Keala Montgomery got aboard via an error to start the game. She stole second, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a double put in play by Maeve McLaughlin, who later came around to score on another Capital error.

The Owls' two-run first inning was followed by a three-run second inning in which Leah Schlissberg had an RBI single and Leah Kuban posted her team-leading third sacrifice fly of the season. Schlissberg eventually rounded the bases on a third Comets' error, pushing Kenyon ahead 5-0.

The cold and windy weather did not play favorites, though. The Kenyon defense committed a couple errors in the bottom of the second inning, allowing three Capital runs to score. The Owls' lead then vanished in the bottom of the third inning, when the Comets scored two more runs on two singles, a sacrifice bunt, and a wild pitch.

Both teams scored two more in the fourth, making the game square at 7-7. In Kenyon's half of the inning, McLaughlin singled, giving her five straight multi-hit games.

Two more Kenyon errors in the sixth led to a 9-7 Capital lead. In the top of the seventh, Kenyon got a single from Kinsey White, who later scored on a Montgomery single. That, however, would be it for the Owls, who left 10 runners on base throughout the game and fell just one run short.

Pitcher Kylie Hamm nearly went the distance, recording all but the last out. She gave up eight hits and just five of the nine runs she yielded were earned.

In game two, sophomore pitcher Izzy Akin had a great game going for Kenyon until the bottom of the seventh. To that point, she had allowed just two runs on six hits. In the seventh, however, the Comets got to her for three hits, a walk, and a pair of wild pitches. That flipped a 4-2 Kenyon lead into another one-run win for the Comets.

Offensively, Kenyon was limited to just five hits by Capital pitching. Montgomery had two hits at the top of the lineup. Schlissberg, Kuban, and Peyton Green had the other three hits.

The Owls scored three of their four runs in the fourth inning. A bases-loaded ground out from Jillian Messinger scored Kuban, who doubled earlier in the inning. White then put the ball in play, leading to a Capital error that plated two more Kenyon runs.

In the fifth inning, Kenyon's final run was recorded after Montgomery tripled and scored on a ground out from Schlissberg. Throughout the two games, Montgomery was 3-for-7 with three runs, one RBI, three walks, and two stolen bases.

Kenyon will next travel to Bluffton University for a Saturday doubleheader and then return to Gambier for its home-opening doubleheader against Otterbein University on Sunday.
