Undefeated Capital deals Kenyon two losses

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- Coming into Monday's doubleheader at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex, both the Kenyon College and Capital University baseball teams had 5-0 records. By the end of the day, Capital remained undefeated after handing the Owls losses of 13-11 and 7-1.

Kenyon let a game-one win slip through its hands. With the team leading 11-3 in the top of the fifth inning, Owls pitching got tagged for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and then another four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Prior to the Comets' rally, the Owls were cruising. Starting pitcher Griffin Jackson held Capital batters to just two earned runs in four innings of work. He struck out four and walked just one before yielding to the bullpen in the fifth inning.

At the plate, the Owls put up seven runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to build that seemingly comfortable 11-3 advantage. The seven-run inning was built off of four base on balls and singles from Ben Resnick, Aaron Moss, and Matt Ardell. The three-run inning was powered by a two-run double from Tyler Nee and a sacrifice fly from Niko Price.

Nee, batting in the two-hole, was 3-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI in that first game. Resnick had two hits and scored three times.

In game two, Kenyon's offense was held in check by Capital starting pitcher Will Furry and the Comets bullpen. Furry gave up just one unearned run in four innings. He yielded five hits, struck out four, and walked four. Three Comet relievers closed out the final three innings, combining to give up just two hits and walk.

Kenyon did get on the board first in game two, getting to Furry for a run in the third inning. Price kicked off the inning with a double to left center. Two batters later, Zack Weber reached first base on a Capital error, which allowed Price to score from second.

The Owls had just six hits in game two. Two of those hits came from Colbie Corpuz and two more from Nee, who finished the doubleheader a combined 5-for-8 with a run, three RBI, a walk, and three stolen bases.

Starting pitching was once again strong for Kenyon. Sophomore Chris Cannuscio nearly went five innings and gave up just three hits. He did walk four, but struck out six and only one of the four runs he allowed was earned.

Capital (7-0) got those four runs off Cannuscio in the top of the fifth, to take the lead for good. The Comets then added a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

The Owls (5-2) will get a day off Tuesday and then resume play Wednesday with a single game against Lebanon Valley College at 2 p.m.
