Owls clip No. 23 Captains to cap competitive road trip

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Lining up against a ranked opponent for the third time in two days, the No. 13-ranked Kenyon College men's tennis team closed its weekend road trip against No. 23-ranked Christopher Newport University. The Owls could have easily come out flat after two tough duals the day prior, but Kenyon showed its competitive spirit against a CNU (7-4) team playing in its home state and playing on six days' rest. The Owls dominated doubles and had strong singles showings en route to a 5-2 victory.

The win, Kenyon's sixth straight, boosted the team's record to 15-1 this season. The mark matches the 15-1 start by Kenyon's 2007-08 squad that finished with a program-best 25-2 record after 15 straight wins to open that season. The Owls also improved to 5-1 against ranked teams this spring, capping a 3-0 weekend against teams with a number next to their name.

All three of Kenyon's doubles duos were up to the task against the Captains, and the Owls won all three doubles matches with matching 6-2 scores. Juozas Cioladis and Maximo Llamas Castellanos set the tone in the top spot and continued their unblemished start to the season. The duo is 18-0 overall and 14-0 in dual play, including a stellar 10-0 mark at No. 1. Paulo Pocasangre Kreling and Jay Kedar Dixit improved to 5-1 as a No. 2 duo, while Alejandro Gonzalez and Eliezer Gonzalez added to the doubles sweep with a win at No. 3.

The top of the lineup cruised in singles, where Llamas Castellanos and Alejandro Gonzalez secured straight-set sweeps. Llamas Castellanos continued his unbeaten start in dual play as the first-year improved to 14-0 and 18-3 overall with a 6-0, 6-4 victory in the first flight. At No. 2, Gonzalez got to 4-0 while playing in the second spot, improving to 8-1 in dual play with a 6-2, 6-4 win.

CNU claimed hard-fought, three-set victories at No. 3 and No. 6, but the Owls handled business at No. 4 and No. 5 to clinch the dual. Cioladis narrowly missed out on a two-set sweep and battled for a 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 triumph in the No. 4 match. At No. 5, Kedar Dixit dug deep in a difficult third set, prevailing 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5). Cioladis improved to 15-0 in dual play, while Kedar Dixit is 8-1.

After playing nine times in 18 days, all on the road, the Owls will enjoy a well-deserved break before their next matchup. Kenyon will take a trip to The College of Wooster (7-2, 0-0 NCAC) on Thursday, April 2, as the Owls look to improve to 2-0 against North Coast Athletic Conference foes this season.
