Owls top Knights, record third straight win

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Bridgette Cassidy and Spencer Kirsch each posted a team-high four goals, while Meagan Lacombe made 11 saves as the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team posted a wire-to-wire, 15-8, home victory Thursday evening against the Calvin University Knights.

The win evened out Kenyon's season record at 4-4 and was the Owls' third straight victory. On the other side of the field, the loss dropped Calvin to 5-4.

Kirsch got the Owls offense running early, scoring both of the game's first two goals within the first three minutes of play. Calvin got one back, but Cassidy and Charlotte Skelly answered for Kenyon, bringing the first quarter to a close with Kenyon in front, 4-1.

The Knights then pulled within one goal after scoring the first two of the second quarter. Kirsch and Lily Mason fired back with a goal apiece and the Owls held a 6-4 advantage at the break.

Again, Calvin pulled within one after netting the first score of the second half, but Kenyon cracked the game open, scoring the next five goals in a span of six minutes. Cassidy scored twice in the run, Kirsch scored once, as did Mason and Ashley Auerbach. That outburst gave the Owls a more comfortable 11-5 lead.

Calvin never got closer than five goals the rest of the way.

Following up on Cassidy's and Kirsch's four goals, Skelly, Mason, and Elena Zuvekas each scored twice, while Ashley Quinn served up a team-best two assists. Ella Rigoli led the Owls with four draw controls and Cecily Torres scooped up a team-best four ground balls.

Kenyon out-shot Calvin 39-31 and the Owls defense coaxed the Knights into 24 turnovers, including seven failed clears.

Lacombe's 11 saves tied her season high and her performance lowered her season goals against average to 11.07

Kenyon's next game will also be at home, as the Owls host No. 19-ranked Christopher Newport University on Sunday at noon.
