Phi Beta Kappa inducts student-athlete duo

GAMBIER, Ohio – Saturday marks Kenyon College's induction ceremony for the 2026 induction class of Phi Beta Kappa, a top undergraduate honor society. Two of the eight new members receiving this great distinction are senior student-athletes Lucy Cassell-Kelley and Bridgette Cassidy.

Established in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa recognizes exemplary academic contributions after three years of collegiate school and is by merit invitation only.

Cassell-Kelley, a molecular biology major, is a diver on the women's swimming and diving team. She is a three-time College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association (CSCAA) Scholar All-America second-team honoree and is a two-time member of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Academic Honor Roll. Cassell-Kelley was the NCAC runner-up on the three-meter board at the 2026 NCAC Championships. In addition, she placed ninth for one-meter diving at the 2026 NCAA Division III Region 1 Diving Championships.

Cassidy is a midfielder on the women's lacrosse team and is majoring in psychology. She is a two-time member of the NCAC Academic Honor Roll, a 2025 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection, and a 2026 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association (IWLCA) All-Academic Honor Roll recipient. To date, Cassidy has collected 33 career points from 24 goals and nine assists. She has played in 43 games as an Owl and set a career-high of 37 draw controls during the 2026 season.

"At Kenyon, we believe that some of the most meaningful learning happens across experiences—in the classroom, on the playing field or in the pool—and through the challenges that shape us," said Judy Holdener, a Kenyon Professor of Mathematics and Faculty Athletics Representative. "These two Phi Beta Kappa inductees exemplify the richness of a Kenyon education, bringing intellectual curiosity, determination and purpose to all they do. Their achievements are a source of pride for the entire community."

As stated by the national Phi Beta Kappa society, three-quarters of collegiate coursework toward the individual's bachelor's degree must be within the liberal arts or sciences fields of study. They must demonstrate and show an understanding of a second or non-native language and take at least one mathematics, statistics, or logic course. In addition, Phi Beta Kappa stresses the importance of inductees demonstrating behaviors consistent with the high standards and principles of the institution's code of conduct.

At Kenyon, a small number of seniors get chosen to be inducted into the campus Phi Beta Kappa chapter during the fall of their senior year. They get the opportunity to hold leadership positions and induct the rest of the class in May.
