Pioneers take two from Owls

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Marietta College pitching staff limited the Kenyon College softball team to 13 hits and seven runs in a doubleheader sweep Sunday at Arbuckle Field. The host Pioneers outlasted the Owls in game one, 8-6, and then coasted to a five-inning, run-rule, 9-1 victory in game two.

The highlight of the day for Kenyon was the continued production off the bat of sophomore Leah Kuban, who belted two home runs in game one and can now be declared a legitimate threat to the program single-season record for long balls. Kuban's two blasts on Sunday gave her seven for the season, just two dingers shy of the record of nine, set by Lindsey Susolik in the 2015 season.

With Marietta holding a 3-1 lead at the conclusion of the fourth inning in game one, Kenyon started chipping away. In the top of the fifth, the Owls got an RBI single from Maeve McLaughlin, who plated Keala Montgomery. Just one run away from tying things up, Kuban belted a solo shot to left field, knotting the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning.

The Kenyon momentum didn't hold, however, as Marietta put a five spot on the board in the bottom of the sixth to take a commanding 8-3 lead.

To their credit, the Owls did not fade away. In their final at-bat, they scored three more times on three hits and a walk. Montgomery led off the frame with a walk and, two batters later, McLaughlin singled. Kuban then took a 1-1 pitch over the right-field fence to get the score to 8-6, before the Pioneers recorded the last two outs to earn the win.

Throughout both games, Kenyon pitching could not find a way to slow the Marietta offense down. Reliever Allison McCutchen took the game-one loss and starter Becca Boue took the game-two loss. In all, Kenyon used five different arms in the doubleheader, but Marietta managed two-game totals that included 17 runs on 21 hits, nine walks, and one Kenyon error.

In game two, the Pioneers scored one in the first inning, two in the second, and then five in the third to take an 8-1 lead.

The Owls' lone run in game two was scored in the third inning. WIth one out, first-year Leah Schlissberg doubled to the right-center gap. Three batters later, Peyton Green, also a first-year, singled to center to score Schlissberg.

In the bottom of the fifth, Marietta (12-8) got the one run it needed to put the run-rule into effect, capping the game early and completing the sweep.

Kenyon (11-13) had just five hits in game two, with two of them coming off the bat of Schlissberg. In game one, the Owls had eight hits, with three coming from Kuban and two each from McLaughlin and Brooke Avila. McLaughlin, who also had a hit in game two, extended her hit streak to eight games, including six multi-hit games.

Kenyon will now return to conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader at The College of Wooster.
