Sixth-inning surge lifts Eagles past Owls

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Under clear blue skies and warm sunshine at the Lawnwood Complex, the Owls returned to action for game eight of their spring break slate, facing the University of Northwestern (MN) Eagles on a beautiful morning in Florida. With temperatures hovering near 80 degrees and calm winds drifting across the field, the atmosphere felt ideal for baseball as parents lined the stands and chants echoed through the complex. Despite the lively setting, Kenyon dropped a tightly contested 4-2 decision to Northwestern. The loss moves the Owls to 7-4 overall, while the Eagles earned their first win of the season, improving to 1-2.

Both teams traded early opportunities but were unable to break through during the opening frames. Kenyon threatened in the second inning when Otto McDill tripled to right field, putting a runner just feet away, but the Eagles escaped the jam with a strikeout and pop-up to keep the game scoreless.

The Owls again applied pressure in the third inning. Parker Ellis reached on an error and stole second before Aaron Moss drew a walk. Tyler Nee moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt, but Northwestern once again worked out of trouble, stranding two runners and maintaining the deadlock.

Kenyon finally broke through in the sixth inning. After Nee was hit by a pitch and stole second, Gio Giuliani lined a single to left field and quickly swiped second to put two runners in scoring position. Niko Price followed with a sharp single to left, bringing both runners home and giving the Owls a 2-0 lead.

Northwestern responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning. A leadoff walk and a double cut the deficit in half before a two-out rally flipped the game. Parker Huebsch delivered an RBI single to tie the contest, and Bryce Campbell followed with a run-scoring double down the right-field line to push the Eagles ahead 3-2.

The Eagles added an insurance run in the eighth inning when Campbell lined an RBI single that brought home Ben Hixon, extending the lead to two runs.

Kenyon made one final push in the ninth. McDill was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Bryce McNair followed with a pinch-hit single, moving the tying run into scoring position. However, Northwestern's defense held firm, recording the final outs to secure the 4-2 victory.

Price led the Owls offensively with two RBIs on his sixth-inning single, while McDill's triple was the highlight of the early innings. Giuliani added a base hit and a stolen base while Ellis and Moss each had one hit with four at-bats.

On the mound, KC starter Chris Cannuscio kept the Eagles off the board through the first five before Northwestern's sixth-inning rally. Jackson Niedel entered in relief and recorded key outs during the middle frames, while Isaiah Vance handled late-inning duties. Northwestern's pitching staff limited the Owls to just two runs, giving Kason Pietruszewski the win at pitcher,

Up next, the Owls will have a day of rest before returning to the diamond as they face Monmouth College in a doubleheader on Monday, March 9, with the first game set for 10 a.m..
