Nationally-ranked Chapman sweeps Kenyon

HONOLULU, Hawaii -- The Kenyon College softball team had the tough task of trying to take down the No. 19-ranked Panthers of Chapman University on Sunday, the opening day of the Ulili Softball Invitational at the Sand Island State softball complex. The Owls, kicking off a slate of eight Invitational games, suffered a five-inning, 10-0, game-one loss and then a 15-4 game-two loss.

Right from the start, Chapman showed how powerful its offense was, as the Panthers pelted Kenyon starting pitcher Kyle Hamm with nine first-innings runs on eight hits and a walk. Chapman's first five runners got on base. Doubles from Kloe Lobato and Katie Miyasato put the Panthers ahead, 5-0. Four batters later, Shea Higa ripped a two-run, inside-the-park home run that extended Chapman's lead to 9-0.

Kenyon's offense was not able to respond. The Owls were limited to just two hits by Chapman starter Rose Malen, who completed five innings of shutout ball. Kenyon hits came from Keala Montgomery, who singled in the top of the fourth, and from Leah Kuban, who doubled in the top of the fifth.

Chapman (11-3) tacked on one more run in the bottom of the second off Kenyon reliever Allison McCutchen, who picked up for Hamm and worked through the third inning. First-year Becca Boue then came on to work a scoreless fourth.

In game two, the Owls were much more competitive. Chapman took a 2-0 lead after the first two innings of play, but the Kenyon offense pushed home its first run of the day in the bottom of the third inning. Montgomery got things started with a two-out double. She then stole third base and came home on an RBI single from first-year Leah Schlissberg.

Kenyon (4-4) starting pitcher Izzy Akin was doing her part, as well, holding the Panthers to two runs across four innings. In the top of the fifth, however, the Chapman team started timing up Akin and roughed her up for three more runs. McCutchen came in to take over for Akin, but a wild pitch from her allowed one more Chapman run and a 6-1 Panthers' lead.

The Owls bats kept producing, though. In the bottom of the fifth, they generated two runs on five hits. Montgomery got on base and scored off an RBI single from Maeve McLaughlin. After a Kuban single, McLaughlin moved to second. Emma Cashell then ripped a double that scored McLaughlin.

In the bottom of the sixth, Kenyon pulled within two runs, at 6-4, after first-year Peyton Green doubled and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Montgomery, who was a combined 3-for-5 with two runs scored, one RBI, and one stolen base throughout the doubleheader.

The Panthers then ended the day the same way they started it, posting another nine-run inning. Chapman batters torched a pair of Kenyon relievers for those nine runs on six hits and five walks.
