Owls strike early, but Tigers’ late scoring secures sweep

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- The Kenyon College Owls started the scoring in both ends of their baseball doubleheader against the DePauw University Tigers, but the home team had the last laugh in each game as the Tigers took the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) bouts thanks to high-scoring late innings. DePauw overcame a 4-0 deficit for a 10-4 game-one win before erasing Kenyon's 6-0 game-two lead to win 12-7.

Kenyon (11-16, 0-8 NCAC) could not have asked for a much better start to either game as the Owls' offense jumped ahead with big swings to put the visitors on the board first twice. In game one, Zack Webber needed just one swing to put four runs on the board as the sophomore's second career home run was a grand slam that put Kenyon ahead 4-0 in the third inning.

Another big third-inning swing set the Owls up with a 6-0 lead in game two, when junior Ben Russell launched a three-run dinger that doubled Kenyon's edge. Russell's rocket was his team-leading third of the season, and it extended a strong stretch that has seen the catcher compile seven RBIs in his last four games.

Unfortunately for the visitors, DePauw (20-8, 6-2 NCAC) delivered quick answers to each big blast. The Tigers tied the first game 4-4 with matching two-run homers in the third and fourth innings of the first game, and a DePauw grand slam got the home team back into game two as the Tigers erased Kenyon's six-run lead with a five-run third frame.

In addition to erasing significant early deficits, DePauw did damage late to decide both games. The Tigers pulled away with a six-run eighth inning in game one, before a five-run seventh inning marked the final margin of game two. DePauw's game-one scoring spurt all came with two outs in the eighth inning as seven straight Tigers reached safely, thanks to four singles and three walks. In game two, DePauw took the lead on a wild pitch before back-to-back RBI hits that gave way to an eventual two-RBI double that capped the 5-0 stretch.

Junior Peyton Hodges, Kenyon's ERA leader this season, had a solid start in game one outside of two pitches that led to DePauw dingers and four runs. Senior Andrew Catron had the only scoreless showing in game two, striking out two Tigers in his inning of work.

Kenyon will take a break from conference play as the Owls have just one mid-week game on deck. Nearby Mt. Vernon Nazarene University, an NAIA institution, will travel from a town over to take on the Owls on Tuesday, April 14. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at McCloskey Field. Kenyon will then welcome Wabash College (8-17, 3-5 NCAC) to Gambier on Saturday, April 18, when the Owls will celebrate their Senior Day.
