Kenyon’s early lead holds up against Allegheny

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College baseball team jumped all over the Allegheny College Gators, scoring nine times in the first three innings of Thursday's game at McCloskey Field. Although the host Owls maintained the lead from start to finish, the early cushion was needed in what turned out to be an 11-9 win.

Kenyon (11-10) got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a hit from Ben Resnick that scored two runs. In the second inning, the Owls posted six runs on seven hits, including a two-run homer from sophomore Zack Webber and a two-run single from first-year Otto McDill. The homer was the first collegiate home run for Webber.

If that wasn't enough, in the bottom of the third, Aaron Moss singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on Gio Giuliani double that put the Owls ahead, 9-0.

Meanwhile, on the mound, Kenyon starter Chris Cannuscio was mowing down Gator batters. Cannuscio, a sophomore, retired the first 11 batters he faced, carrying a no-hit game into the fourth inning. But, just one out away from closing out the fourth, an error at first base derailed the Owls. After the miscue, Allegheny rattled off three straight singles, blasted a two-run home run, moved within four runs of the Owls, and chased Cannuscio from the game.

Things got even more uncomfortable for Kenyon when Allegheny scored twice more in the fifth inning to pull within two runs, at 9-7.

Kenyon relievers struggled to stop the Gator offense until Jackson Niedel came on to finish off the fifth inning. He stayed in the game for two innings and got things back under control for the Owls by allowing just one hit and striking out three.

Still clinging to a two-run lead, the Owls saw McDill get hit by a pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning. Two batters later, Ben Russell smoked a homer to left, pushing the Kenyon club in front 11-7. For Russell, a sophomore, the long ball was his second of the season.

Allegheny (14-8) matched that two-run homer with a shot in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Kenyon reliever Jack Enger worked through a walk and an error in the ninth inning to close the door, earning the save and preserving the pitching win for Niedel.

In all, the Kenyon offense had 14 hits with four of those coming from Giuliani, who was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Webber was 2-for-4 with three RBI, while, at the top of the order, junior Tyler Nee was 2-for-5 with one run scored. Kenyon's six other hits came off the bats of six different players.

While Kenyon's pitching lines were not overly impressive, Owl arms only yielded four earned runs and did strike out a dozen.

The Owls now return to conference play on Saturday, hosting the Wittenberg University Tigers in a doubleheader that will start at 11 a.m.
