Kenyon ousts Oberlin to earn playoff berth

GAMBIER, Ohio – With two games left in the regular season, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team hosted Oberlin College from the field at Benson Bowl on Tuesday evening, with an opportunity to clinch a spot in the four-team North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) playoffs with a win.

With a huge eight-goal first quarter, the Owls were able to do just that, fending off a late push from the Yeo to earn a 16-10 victory.

Ashley Auerbach scored the opening goal for Kenyon at 11:03 in the first, one of her six tallies for the day, a new career high for the sophomore. Oberlin tied the game at 10:27, but the Owls charged to a three goal run to take a 4-1 lead with scores from Susannah Zimmerman and two woman-up tallies from Spencer Kirsch and Charlotte Skelly. The Yeo stopped the run at 5:26, but Kenyon ended the first on a 4-0 run. Josie DeBruer, Ashley Quinn, Auerbach and Skelly all joined in to help their team take an 8-2 advantage after 15 minutes.

To open the second, Oberlin did its best to cut into the lead, scoring three out of the first four goals to start the second quarter. Zimmerman scored her second of the day to supplement the Owls scoring, and two goals from Kirsch and Ella Baxter in the final six minutes of the half restored a six goal lead at 11-6.

After the break, Kenyon opened up a 4-0 run thanks to three goals from Auerbach and one from Lily Mason, who was just awarded the NCAC's Athlete of the Week. Auerbach scored again at 2:13 in the third and despite two late scores from the Yeo, the Owls held a 16-7 advantage going into the final frame.

The home team didn't score in the fourth, but thanks to the work the team put in after halftime and the opening quarter, Oberlin's three goal stretch didn't do much to break through in the end. The Owls cruised to a 16-10 win in the end, guaranteeing a spot in the NCAC playoffs.

Auerbach's big day led all players with six points, while Kirsch, Zimmerman and Skelly all scored twice to make up a group of six Owls with multi-point outings. Quinn led the squad with four ground balls, while six defenders caused a turnover. Meagan Lacombe made six saves in between the pipes, and Persia Shipman stopped four in relief.

Kenyon's final regular season game will be on Saturday, April 25 at 5:00 p.m. against Wittenberg University on the road.
