Owls split two with OWU

DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College baseball team made the short trip to Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday for a conference doubleheader with the host Battling Bishops. The Kenyon offense couldn't get going in game one and suffered a 6-1 defeat, but the Owls bounced back in game two, winning 8-5 in a contest that was cut short because of storms.

After a quiet game one, the Owls offense got right to work in game two, scoring single runs in the first and second innings. In the first inning it was a solo homer from junior Gio Giuliani, his first of the year. In the second inning, it was senior Parker Ellis who led things off with a double. He moved to third on a Ben Zimmerman single and then scored on an OWU throwing error.

Kenyon tacked on four more runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead. That outburst was aided by four more OWU errors, one hit batter, and one walk. Kenyon had just one hit, a double from Matt Ardell, in the inning, but the Owls added to the chaotic scene with five stolen bases.

Meanwhile, Kenyon starting pitcher Sam Howell cruised through five innings of work. He gave up just one earned run on two hits. He didn't walk a batter and he struck out four. That was good enough to run his pitching record to 2-3 on the season.

In the seventh inning, singles from Otto McDill, Zimmerman, Aaron Moss, and Tyler Nee led to a couple more Kenyon runs and an 8-1 lead.

The Kenyon bullpen did not hold up their end of the deal and gave up four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Dylan Ritzenthaler, however, recorded the last three outs without yielding a run to earn his first save of the season.

In game one, Ohio Wesleyan starting pitcher Parker Tomlin handcuffed Kenyon batters for the duration. Tomlin threw all nine innings and gave up just the one run on seven hits and two walks. He struck out 10 and recorded seven groundouts and 10 flyouts. The win moved his pitching record to 6-2.

Kenyon got a single in the first inning and another single in the third inning. In the top of the fifth inning, Ellis accounted for the lone Owls' run, smashing a home run to left center. It was his first home run of the season and the third of his career.

Ellis also doubled in the top of the seventh and again in the top of the ninth, but was left stranded both times. Overall, Ellis was 3-for-4 with that trio of extra-base hits in the first game. Kenyon's other four hits were all singles.

On the mound for Kenyon, Peyton Hodges got the start and took the loss. He went five innings and gave all six OWU runs on nine hits and a walk. The big blast against Hodges came in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Colton Moone launched a three-run homer.

After that, Kenyon relievers Jack Briscoe and Isaiah Vance kept the Battling Bishops scoreless over the final three innings.

At the end of the day, Ellis had four hits across both games, while Nee, Giuliani, and Zimmerman each had three.
