Last-second goal upends Owls’ upset bid

WOOSTER, Ohio -- A North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Women's Lacrosse Tournament semifinal game at The College of Wooster came down to the final second Wednesday night, as the host Fighting Scots made good on a buzzer-beating free position shot to defeat the Kenyon College Owls, 18-17, at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (16-1), which trailed by three goals with less than six minutes to play, got the job done and now advances to take on Denison University in Saturday's NCAC Championship game.

With 5:52 left in the game, the Fighting Scots got a goal from Sophia Mellis to pull within two, at 17-15. Thirty-six seconds later, Lizzie Hardy scored to make it 17-16, and then, with just 42 seconds left, Kylie MacMillan brought Wooster all the way back, knotting the game at 17-17.

On the ensuing draw control, MacMillan gained control for Wooster and was fouled in a situation that put Kenyon a woman down. When play restarted, the Fighting Scots got the ball back to Mellis, who drove and drew another foul, this one resulting in a free position shot with just three seconds left. Mellis then converted the free position as time expired.

Despite the loss, Kenyon (9-8) couldn't have played a much better game. The Owls led by as many as three and never trailed by more than three.

In the first half, both teams opened the throttle on offense. Wooster scored its first 11 goals on 19 shots, while Kenyon scored its first 11 on 15 shots. Coming into the game, Kenyon allowed an average of 11.78 goals per game and Wooster allowed just 7.70 goals per game.

By the time the teams got to the halftime break, 13 different players had at least one goal. Kenyon was led by sophomore Ashley Auerbach, who netted a trio of first-half goals, while Wooster got four first-half goals from Mellis and three more from Mizan Jacobs.

The Fighting Scots got ahead by as many as three late in the first quarter, but a score from Charlotte Skelly got the Owls within two, closing out the frame with Wooster ahead, 7-5. In the second quarter, the two teams traded goals until Kenyon logged back-to-back tallies from Auerbach and Spencer Kirsch, who tied the game at 10-10. Each team scored once more in the final minute of the first half, pushing the game to halftime all square at 11-11.

While both teams clearly concentrated on defense in the second half, Auerbach did not let her foot off the gas. She scored the first three goals of the third quarter, giving Kenyon a 14-11 advantage.

Meanwhile, the Kenyon defense held Wooster scoreless until the 2:41 mark of the third quarter. That's when the Fighting Scots finally broke through in a woman-up situation.

For the next 10 minutes of play, Kenyon maintained a two- or three-goal lead, until Wooster made its final push.

Auerbach ended up with six goals for Kenyon. Ella Baxter and Ashley Quinn also had six-point games, both notching one goal and five assists. Kirsch had three goals, while Skelly and Lily Mason each scored twice.

On the other side of the field, Wooster's Mellis led all scorers with eight points on seven goals and one assist.
