GAMBIER, Ohio – A tightly contested battle through the opening half unraveled in the third quarter Tuesday afternoon as the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team fell to The College of Wooster, 18-11, in North Coast Athletic Conference play at Benson Bowl.
With the result, the Owls slip to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in NCAC play, while the Fighting Scots continued their red-hot start to the season, improving to 10-0 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
Kenyon burst out of the gates early, setting the tone in the opening quarter. After Wooster secured the initial draw, the Owls forced a turnover that led to the first strike of the afternoon when
Ashley Quinn scooped up a ground ball and fired home the game's opening goal at the 13:47 mark.
The Fighting Scots answered moments later, but Kenyon quickly reasserted control.
Ashley Auerbach slotted an unassisted goal to regain the lead before Quinn threaded a sharp assist to
Charlotte Skelly, stretching the margin to 3-1. Minutes later,
Lily Mason capped the Owls' early surge with another unassisted tally, pushing Kenyon ahead 4-1 midway through the first frame.
Wooster slowly clawed its way back, capitalizing on a pair of late goals to trim the deficit to 4-3 by the end of the opening quarter. The second period unfolded as a back-and-forth affair, with neither side gaining separation. Auerbach and Skelly each struck again for Kenyon, the latter delivering a late go-ahead goal with 1:20 remaining in the half that sent the Owls into the break with a slim 6-5 advantage.
The momentum shifted dramatically following halftime. Wooster erupted with a relentless scoring run in the third quarter, pouring in seven goals while holding Kenyon to just two. The Scots knotted the game just seconds into the period before piling on a series of quick strikes that turned a tight contest into a 12-8 advantage heading into the final stanza.
Kenyon attempted to claw back in the fourth. Mason found the net early in the frame, and Auerbach later converted on a man-up opportunity following a Wooster penalty to trim the margin to four. Skelly added another goal shortly after to keep the Owls within striking distance at 15-11 with just over seven minutes to play.
However, the Fighting Scots delivered the final blow down the stretch. Wooster closed the afternoon with three unanswered goals in the final minutes, highlighted by a late scoring flurry from Lizzie Hardy that sealed the 18-11 decision.
Despite the setback, several Owls turned in strong individual performances. Auerbach paced Kenyon offensively with four goals, tying her season-high, while Mason and Skelly each tallied three goals of their own. Quinn contributed a goal and two assists, playing a key role in Kenyon's early scoring burst. Defensively, Mason added three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while goalkeeper
Meagan Lacombe anchored the crease with 11 saves against a barrage of 37 Wooster shots.
As a team, Wooster finished with a 37-27 advantage in shots and controlled 16 draw controls, while Kenyon recorded 15 draws and 14 ground balls on the afternoon.
Up next, the Owls will look to bounce back as they travel down the road to face rival Denison University in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup, with first draw set for 12:00 p.m.
