Kenyon handles Adrian to start homestand

GAMBIER, Ohio – After four games on the road over the last two weeks, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team headed back to the Field at Benson Bowl on Saturday afternoon to host Adrian College and kick off a five game homestand.

With the lift of a big second quarter in which the Owls scored six times, the home team was able to outpace the Bulldogs and hold on in the end to capture a 17-11 winner.

Kenyon opened the game with three straight goals, two of those coming off the stick of Delaney Champeau. She scored at 13:54 in the first to jumpstart the run and after Ashley Quinn found the net at 9:06, buried another at 5:21. Adrian snuck one in with 17 seconds in the quarter for a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes.

The second quarter was the Owls' best in terms of offensive output, scoring six goals and capitalizing on woman up and free position opportunities. Charlotte Skelly netted her first of the game with an assist from Elana Zuvekas before Ashley Auerbach converted a free position attempt at 7:59. The Bulldogs responded with two goals of their own to set the score 5-3, but Kenyon ripped off a 4-0 run to get ahead.

Josie DeBruer and Spencer Kirsch each made free position attempts just over a minute apart at the five minute mark, while Auerbach and Skelly took advantage of woman-up opportunities to expand the lead to 9-3. Adrian scored at 48 seconds to cut the lead to five at the half.

After the break, the Bulldogs scored within the first minute of the third, but the Owls responded with another impressive 3-0 run. Lily Mason scored on a woman-up opportunity, while Auerbach added two more down the stretch to build a 12-5 lead, the team's largest of the game, heading to the fourth.

The final frame was Adrian's best offensively, but Kenyon was able to respond every step of the way to eventually ice the game. The Bulldogs scored two to open the fourth, but Skelly netted two of her own to restore a 14-7 advantage at 9:39. The visitors went on a 4-1 run down the stretch, but goals by Mamie Kasten, Zuvekas and Kirsch put the finishing touches on the Owls' third win of the season.

Skelly and Auerbach led Kenyon with four goals apiece, while Zuvekas was not far behind with three points in a successful offensive day for the home team, as 12 players found the stat sheet. On the other end of the field, the Owls' defense caused nine turnovers and Bridgette Cassidy corralled a team high four ground balls. Meagan Lacombe made eleven saves in net at a .500 save percentage, the former tying her season high.

Kenyon's record improves to 3-4 on the season. Next, up the Owls will welcome Calvin University on Thursday, March 26 at 5:00 p.m.
