Record-setting season ends in tournament play

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The Kenyon College softball team capped off a record-breaking season Thursday even though it was ousted from the double-elimination North Coast Athletic Conference four-team tournament. The Owls lost their tournament opener, 9-4, to the host Wittenberg University Tigers, and then bowed out of competition with a 7-5 loss to the DePauw University Tigers.

Kenyon entered the tournament as the No. 4 seeded team and left the tournament with a 19-23 overall record. Wittenberg (26-16) was the No. 1-seeded team, DePauw (24-15) was the No. 2 seed, and Denison University (19-19), which won both of its Thursday games, was the No. 3 seed.

Kenyon, throughout the season, set more than 20 different team and individual single-game, single-season, and career records. Junior Keala Montgomery had two hits Thursday and established the program single season record for hits (68) and total bases (112). Leah Kuban set the single-season mark for slugging percentage (.752) and RBI (50). As a team, some of the single-season records that fell included batting average (.344), hits (412), runs (277), and RBI (244). It was easily the top producing offense in program history.

When the tournament games got started, however, the Owls got behind early, as Wittenberg and DePauw both put together big first innings. Against Wittenberg, Kenyon got a run in the top of the first, but the Tigers took advantage of a trio of Kenyon miscues—including a misplayed bunt, a wild pitch, and an error—to move ahead 4-1. Two more runs in the bottom of the second gave Wittenberg a comfortable five-run advantage.

Kenyon matched those last two Wittenberg runs with a pair of its own in the top of the third inning. Those came from Montgomery, who darted from third base to tap the plate after a passed ball, and from Leah Schlissberg, who singled and later came around to score on another single from Maeve McLaughlin.

An RBI single from Jillian Messinger cut the Tigers lead to 6-4 in the top of the fourth, but in the bottom of the frame Wittenberg posted a three-spot which put a lid on all scoring.

Kenyon outhit Wittenberg 10-6, but errors and the inability to stop base-stealers cost the Owls, who allowed the Tigers to swipe 10 bases.

DePauw clearly paid attention to that, as it stole six bases in the nightcap. The Tigers also opened play with four straight hits that led to a three-run first inning. They tacked on two more runs in the second, while Kenyon logged single runs in both innings and fell behind 5-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Owls made it interesting. Hits from Lily Colvin and Schlissberg were followed by an RBI groundout from McLaughlin and a sacrifice fly from Kuban. Those two runs cut the deficit to one run, at 5-4.

DePauw answered with two more in the top of the sixth. Kenyon then scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning and got the tying run to the plate, but DePauw ended up getting out of the jam and secured the win.

Over the two-game set, McLaughlin was 3-for-8 with five RBI, Schlissberg was also 3-for-8 with four runs scored, and Colvin was 3-for-5 with a run scored.
