Blue Streaks overpower Owls at Shula Stadium

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The reigning North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) football champion and No. 6-ranked John Carroll University Blue Streaks scored touchdowns during each one of their first six possessions Saturday evening and never looked back during a convincing 56-7 victory over the Kenyon College Owls.

The first five of those drives by the Blue Streaks (3-0, 2-0 NCAC) occurred in the first quarter of play and vaulted the John Carroll team to a huge 35-0 lead after the first 15 minutes of its home-opening game. Quarterback Tyler Green had a hand in four of those first-quarter scores as he threw touchdown passes to four different receivers. The longest of those four covered 58 yards and went to receiver Josh Styles, who crossed the goal line with 3:56 left in the quarter.

Green whipped up one more touchdown pass to start the second quarter and then gave way to backup Bryce Tubin, who tacked on one more scoring strike before the half, putting the Blue Streaks ahead 49-0 at the break.

Kenyon (1-2, 0-2 NCAC) was unable to find a way to stop John Carroll's offense, while struggling to find offense of its own. The Owls had just two first downs and 55 total yards in the first half. On the other hand, the Blue Streaks racked up 17 first-half first downs and 378 yards of offense.

The Owls, who've struggled with turnovers throughout the early season, coughed up the ball three more times against John Carroll. A first-quarter interception led to a Blue Streaks touchdown and a fumble in the third-quarter led to a six-yard touchdown return from the John Carroll defense, which accounted for the team's final score of the day.

Late in the game, the Owls managed to avoid the shutout when they recovered a fumble of their own. Sophomore defensive back Jaiden Grose fell on the loose ball at the Kenyon 47-yard line with 7:02 left to play. Back-up quarterback Ryan Dean, a sophomore, then led the Owls on an 11-play, 53-yard drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown toss to first-year tight end Chimdi Anyanwu.

Dean ended up completing 3-of-10 passes for 59 yards, while starter Drew Morgan, also a sophomore, was 6-of-24 for 71 yards. Kenyon's top two receivers were first-year Max Heis and sophomore Hunter Fike. They both had two receptions. Heis took his for 42 yards and Fike took his for 38. The Owls leading ground gainer was first-year Charlie Runco, who gained 44 yards on 18 carries.

For John Carroll, Green was 13-of-15 for 233 yards and five touchdowns through the air. The Blue Streaks had six different receivers catch two balls each and four of those six snared TD passes. On the ground, Devin Taylor needed just five carries to rack up 66 yards, as the nationally-ranked John Carroll team amassed 453 yards of offense while averaging 8.09 yards per play.

Kenyon returns to McBride Field next weekend for its Homecoming game against another nationally-ranked team in the DePauw University Tigers (2-1, 1-1 NCAC).
