GAMBIER, Ohio — Johns Hopkins scored twice in the opening half and added another goal late in the second as the Blue Jays defeated Kenyon, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Mavec Field.
The Blue Jays (3-0-2) controlled much of the first half, outshooting the Owls 6-1 and taking a 2-0 advantage into halftime.
Carolyn Johnson opened the scoring in the 18th minute, finding the back of the net at 17:06 for her first goal of the season. The Blue Jays continued to pressure the Owls and doubled their advantage shortly before halftime when Kendall Frederick scored an unassisted goal at 43:53.
The Owls came out with more attacking pressure after halftime, recording seven shots in the second period after managing just one in the opening half.
Maia Pasco had a pair of early second-half opportunities, including a blocked shot in the 54th minute.
Kenyon (1-1-2) continued to generate chances as the half progressed.
Hannah Schmidt put a shot on target in the 78th minute, but goalkeeper Ella Kruntchev made the save.
Rafaela Plasa also forced saves in the 86th minute, while
Emily Copeland had a shot blocked in the final minutes.
Johns Hopkins, however, added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute. Katie Derby initially had her shot saved by Kenyon goalkeeper
Lila Michael, but Derby followed up moments later to score her first goal of the season and push the Blue Jays' lead to 3-0.
The Blue Jays finished with a 13-8 advantage in shots and put five attempts on target compared with two for the Owls. Johns Hopkins also held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks, while possession was nearly even, with Kenyon holding 51 percent to the Blue Jays' 49 percent.
Kruntchev finished with two saves to earn the shutout. Michael made two saves in the second half for Kenyon after replacing Kite at halftime.
Kenyon will be home on September 16 to face the University of Mount Union at 4:30 pm.
