Owls open the season with 2nd-place finish

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Kenyon College men's golf team wrapped up its first three-round tournament of the year with a second-place finish at the Gate City Invitational from Forest Oaks Country Club.

A consistent performance, the Owls rode in second through both the first and second rounds, shooting 288 (E) and 289 (+1), respectively. In the third round, the Owls kicked it up a notch and recorded a team-best with a score of 282 (-6).

First-year Alex Harwood led the way for the Owls and finished in a tie for 11th place overall with a one-under-par score. Harwood recorded a two-under 72 performance in the opening round with six birdies, four of those coming from the back nine. He added another six birdies in the second round where he shot one-under par for the day (71). Harwood finished round three two-over par, resulting in a 215 (-1) total score for the weekend.

Rafael Frias IV started the first and second round over par, but had a stellar third-round performance that slotted him in an overall position tied for 14th place. Frias sank eight birdies to come in seven-under par in the final round of the tournament (65). He recorded the team's best round as well as the tournament's best round.

Connor Gray tied for 17th place with a very consistent weekend performance. He shot one-over par in both the first and third rounds and recorded eight birdies overall with his best round being in the second. He shot a 71 (-1) and putted for eagle on the 18th hole.

Adrian Jordan and Jaiden Koonar finished in 21st and 22nd place, respectively, over 99 competitors from 18 different schools. Jordan finished two-over par and recorded nine birdies on the weekend. Koonar shot an overall score of 219 (+3) and putted in 10 birdies.

Competing as an individual, Oliver McGovern tied for 61st place and shot 13-over par on the weekend for a 229 total score.

The Owls finished the weekend with a team score of 859 and an excellent second-place performance. They were tied in second for par-three averages (3.17), in second for scoring par fours (4.08), and ranked first in par fives (4.72). In addition, they were also ranked first for birdies, accumulating 54.

The Owls are back in action September 21-22 at the NCAA Preview in Newport News, VA.
