Owls upend Oberlin, Maher nets game-winner

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College field hockey team (3-3, 2-0) remains undefeated in conference play after a hard-fought 3-2 win against the Oberlin College Yeowomen (2-3, 0-2) during Homecoming Weekend.

The Owls were the first to strike at the 7:26 minute mark, when Ada Wigfield inserted the ball in for a corner to Gigi Johnson. Johnson passed the ball back to Wigfield who snuck it past Oberlin goalkeeper Mia Rubin to bring Kenyon into the lead, 1-0.

With most of the possession for the first half of the game, the Owls continued their attack forward. This time it was Johnson who was able to find the back of the net off of a beautiful right-side cross from Alexandra Dineen. Although Oberlin had some good offensive movement, the team was unable to get any true shots off, and the second quarter ended with Kenyon leading the game, 2-0.

The Yeowomen came back in the third quarter reenergized and ready to gain some momentum. A minute and a half in, Shelby Roth scored for Oberlin at the 31:28 minute mark from a dangerous penalty corner, inserted by Samantha Finkleberg. One minute later, the Yeowomen would tie the score up, 2-2, when Clare Kammeier forced a turnover and netted the ball in the 32nd minute.

The Owls fought hard to gain control of the game back as it became a highly contested match-up. With 13 second-half penalty corners, Kenyon was knocking on the door to get back into the lead. Hendrika Maher answered in the 54th minute to score the game-winning goal. Maren Lawrence danced around several Oberlin defenders before getting off a centering pass. Zady Hasse was able to quickly flick the ball to the back post where Maher was patiently waiting to tap the ball in.

The Owls outshot the Yeowomen 25-3 and forced the Oberlin goalkeeper to make 12 saves. Sofia Chaves recorded one save for the Owls and worked alongside Ariana Rowe, Olivia Wangerow, and Wigfield to keep the Yeowomen out of their defensive third.

The Kenyon field hockey team is back in action at home tomorrow as they take on the visiting Sabres of Marian University at 12:00 P.M.
