Sabres’ two third-quarter goals sink Owls

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Marian University Sabres scored two goals in the third quarter of Sunday's field hockey game and broke away from the Kenyon College Owls for a 4-2 non-conference win.

The loss dropped Kenyon to 3-4 overall, while the win improved Marian's record to 5-2.

The visiting Sabres got on the board first when Angelene Castro sliced a crossing pass over to Charlotte Touw, who then fired her shot past Kenyon goalkeeper Sofia Chaves a little more than 10 minutes into the game.

Kenyon got the equalizer in the second quarter after a shot from Gigi Johnson caused a scrum in front of the Marian cage. The Sabres were whistled for a foul during the play and the Owls were awarded a penalty stroke. Senior Casey Master took the stroke, converted to the lower left corner, and sent the game into halftime knotted at a goal apiece.

In the third quarter, Marian scored twice off of two penalty corners within a span of 3:12. The first of those two was scored by Shaelyn Klassen and the second was by Touw, again. Assists on those two plays went to Clara Guivernau Ragghianti and Klassen, respectively.

Now down by two, Kenyon pushed forward with more urgency in the fourth quarter. With 5:10 left on the game clock, the Owls broke through. An initial shot from Johnson got knocked down in front of the cage. As players scrambled for control, the ball popped up in the air and Ada Wigfield tapped it toward the goal line, where Rigby Zentner was in position to finish it off.

The momentum swing for Kenyon was brief, however. About a minute-and-a-half after the Owls scored their second goal, the Sabres retaliated with their fourth, putting things out of reach. It was Klassen, once again, who did the damage for the Sabres by tacking on an insurance goal with less than four minutes in the game.

Marian outshot Kenyon 20-12, but Kenyon held a slight 10-8 edge in penalty corners. Chaves wound up making three saves, while her counterpart, Emilee Clarey, made five saves for Marian.
