MOBILE, Ala. – During Saturday's final matches of the 2012 USTA/ITA National Small College Championship at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center, Kenyon College senior Paul Burgin finished with a flurry and nailed down a third-place finish, the best finish ever for a Kenyon singles player at the Championship.

Burgin began play Thursday in the national, eight-man tournament with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Neel Kotrappa of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Friday, Burgin dropped his semifinal match in three sets to Robert Kjellberg of North Carolina Wesleyan College. Finally on Saturday morning, playing in the third-place match, Burgin won a 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 marathon over Andy Hersh of Johns Hopkins University. Burgin entered the Championship tournament as the No. 2 seed, while Hersh was the No. 4 seed. Aaron Skinner, an unseeded player from Trinity University, defeated Kjellberg in the final to take the title.

Burgin's match signaled the end of the fall tennis season. He'll carry a 10-3 singles record into the spring, when he and the rest of the Lords resume their 2012-13 season.
