No. 1 Maroons bump Owls from NCAA bracket

CHICAGO -- Taking on the No. 1 team in the nation on its home courts proved to be too difficult a task for the Kenyon College men's tennis team, which put up a fight Saturday afternoon before bowing out of the third round of the NCAA Division III Team Championship with a 4-1 loss to the host Maroons.

The Owls, ranked as the No. 10 team in the nation, finalized their 2025-26 season record at 22-5. While team play came to an end, the season goes on for Alejandro Gonzalez, Maximo Llamas Castellanos, and Juozas Cioladis, who will participate in the NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles Championship next week in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Chicago came out firing from the start on Saturday. The Maroons blitzed Kenyon with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles and a 6-2 win at No. 1 to claim the team doubles point in a hurry.

Like yesterday against Gustavus Adolphus College, Kenyon fought back in singles competition. Gonzalez dropped the No. 1 singles match to Shrikeshav Murugesan by a 6-1, 6-4 final, but Llamas Castellanos neutralized that point by winning the No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-2 against Emil Grantcharov.

Trialing 2-1 on the team scoreboard, Kenyon got first-set wins from Jay Kedar Dixit at No. 5 and from Sree Kondaveeti at No. 6. At No. 3 singles, however, Kenyon senior Paulo Pocasangre Kreling fell to Alexander Ekstrand, 6-4, 6-4.

Needing just one more singles match victory to clinch and advance, the Chicago team saw Ajer Sher overcome Kedat Dixit 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5. With the result, the Maroons advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Team Championship for the third straight season.
