GRANVILLE, Ohio – Denison University's dominance over the Kenyon College women's soccer team in Granville came to an end Tuesday night. Powered by sophomore
Becca Romaine's fourth multi-goal game of the season, the Ladies posted a 2-0 victory at Barclay-Thomsen Field, their first ever on the Big Red's turf.
The win was Kenyon's (6-5-1, 2-1-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) first over Denison since the 2006 regular season, a span of six games. It also was just the Ladies' fourth triumph in the all-time series with each of their previous three victories occurring in Gambier.
Following a scoreless first half, Romaine poured it on early in the second period. She finished off a short pass from
Katie Blake in the 47th minute to break the stalemate. Four minutes later, she dribbled up the right side and deflected a shot off a defender to cap the scoring.
Romaine is now the NCAC's leading goal scorer with 12 on the year, twice as many as the second-place total. The dozen scores match her output from her freshman campaign, and with 24 goals in her career she's already sixth all-time in the Kenyon record book.
While Romaine shouldered the offensive load Tuesday night, she was far from the lone contributor to the Ladies' landmark victory. The defense limited the Big Red (3-8-1, 2-2-0 NCAC) to eight total shots with junior goalkeeper
Lauren Wolfe making three saves. Senior
Charlotte Detchon knocked away a shot at the goal line in the first half to keep Denison off the scoreboard.
