GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College men's basketball team survived a rough shooting night Tuesday by getting a shot in the arm from the junior tandem of
Ikenna Nwadibia and
Brian Lebowitz. Both registered double-doubles and lifted the Lords to a 62-50 home-opening win against the Grove City College Wolverines.
Nwadibia rang up game-highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Lebowitz tossed in 14 points and grabbed 11 boards. The only other Kenyon player to reach double-digit scoring was sophomore
Jonathan Amador, who tallied ten.
The Lords shot just 34.8 percent (23-of-66) from the floor, but shared their struggles with Grove City, which shot 34.7 percent (17-of-49), including a 6-of-23 showing (26.1 percent) from three-point territory. Both teams also produced fairly even numbers in free throws made and rebounding, but not in turnovers. Kenyon took excellent care of the ball, coughing it up just a handful of times. Grove City, however, had 17 turnovers that led to 17 Kenyon points. The Wolverines managed just two points off the Lords' miscues.
Grove City took early leads of 5-0 and 10-9, but when Nwadibia sank his first free throw of the game, the Lords knotted things up ten. A little more than a minute later, Amador buried one of his two three-pointers on the night and the Kenyon men never relinquished the lead.
The Lords (2-1) went ahead by as many as 11 points in the first half and closed it out with a 27-20 lead at the break. That lead ballooned to as many as 17 in the second half after Nwadibia and
John Bray boosted Kenyon through a 9-1 run that put the Lords in front, 42-25, with 13:22 remaining.
Grove City (0-3) came up with a run of its own late in the game, but never got closer than eight points. The Wolverines had just one player reach double-digit scoring and that was Mitch Marmelstein, who scored ten.
