GAMBIER, Ohio – Three different Lords registered double-digit scoring totals Wednesday, but the Kenyon College men's basketball team could not overcome the hot-shooting Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops, who connected on 61.8 percent of their shots for the game and left Tomsich Arena with an 81-69 North Coast Athletic Conference win.
Junior
Ikenna Nwadibia led Kenyon, but came up just shy of posting his fourth double-double of the season. He tallied 13 of his team-high 18 points in the second half and also grabbed a team-high total of nine rebounds. Sophomore
John Bray hit five field goals and four free throws for 14 points, while junior
Julian Pavlin tossed in ten points, his fourth consecutive double-digit scoring output.
Ohio Wesleyan didn't shoot particularly well from three-point range (5-of-14) or at the free throw line (8-of-18), but it did follow through on high-percentage shots, finishing the game 34-of-55. The Bishops showed plenty of balance, too. Andy Winter turned in a team-high 14 points. He was one of three OWU players to reach double digits and one of 11 different OWU players who scored at least one field goal.
The Battling Bishops jumped out to a fast start, but the Lords eventually closed an eight-point gap to one point. Kenyon freshman
Brien Comey hit a jumper at the 10:36 mark to bring OWU's lead to 15-14. That Kenyon push, however, only ended up serving as an alarm for Ohio Wesleyan, which went on to ring up the next nine points. The Bishops then rode that wave into halftime with a 41-30 lead.
The OWU lead dwindled to as few as eight points a couple of times early in the second half, but it also swelled to as many as 21 points with just 8:34 left in the game. From that point on, Kenyon never got closer than 12, which was the final margin.
The loss snapped a quick two-game win streak for the Lords, who dropped to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the NCAC. The road win improved Ohio Wesleyan's record to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
