Lords drop NCAC Tournament opener to OWU

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (May 3, 2012) The hits didn't come for the Kenyon College baseball team Thursday night until it was too late. The Lords used eight hits to score four times from the sixth inning on, but Ohio Wesleyan University's 9-0 cushion absorbed the blows and gave the Battling Bishops a five-run victory in the first round of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament at V.A. Memorial Stadium.

Kenyon (27-11) scratched out three hits over the first five innings and trailed by nine before junior Zack Karson plated the first run in the sixth with an RBI single to rightfield. The Lords added two in the seventh and another in the eighth but would get no closer before yielding the 9-4 win to the Battling Bishops.

Ohio Wesleyan (23-16) came out of the gates swinging with two in the first, one in the third, and two more runs per frame in the fourth through sixth. Seth Frentsos powered the Battling Bishops with a 5-for-5 showing at the plate, which included a pair of doubles, three RBIs and a run scored. Tim Knezovich was one of three OWU batters with two hits each and landed a big blow with his third-inning home run.

Junior Andrew Dunn adeptly set the table from the leadoff spot by going 4-for-5 with two doubles, but couldn't get his teammates to follow suit. Only senior Devin Ensing joined Dunn with a multi-hit game.

Kenyon, the top seed from the conference's East division, is now just one loss away from being ousted from the double-elimination tournament. The Lords will try to hang around awhile longer when they face DePauw University Friday at 4 p.m. As the West's No. 1 seed, the Tigers are in the same boat after they dropped a 4-1 decision to the College of Wooster in Thursday's other game.

The winner of the Kenyon-DePauw matchup will play again at 7 p.m. against the loser from the Wooster-Ohio Wesleyan clash, which will kick off the tripleheader of NCAC tournament action at noon.
