GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's soccer team opened the 2012 season at Mavec Field on Saturday afternoon, but it was the visiting Hanover College Panthers that thwarted several Kenyon opportunities and walked away with 1-0 non-conference victory.
The game's lone goal came from Hanover freshman Rachel Alvis. She took control of the ball just outside the Kenyon box. From the right side she delivered a shot that found its way passed Kenyon keeper
Lauren Wolfe and crossed the goal line about eight minutes into the second half of play.
Kenyon had several chances to avoid the shutout, but none came to fruition. Roughly eight minutes into the game, senior
Courtney Hague had a free kick ricochet off the Panthers' crossbar. Late in the second half, Hague had another free kick. This time Hanover goalkeeper Bethann Hancock made a diving save. Hague got one more look about eight minutes later, but Hancock again was in the right spot to make the save.
Hancock made a total of four saves and earned the shutout win despite Kenyon's 15-9 advantage in shots. At the other end of the pitch, Wolfe made a pair of saves for the Ladies.
Kenyon will get right back at it Sunday, when it hosts the University of Mount Union at 1 p.m.
