GAMBIER, Ohio – The Ladies volleyball team wrapped up its 2012 Kenyon College Invitational Saturday against arguably the two best teams in the round-robin tournament. Despite proving pesky against Juniata College and the University of Mount Union, the Ladies were turned away in a pair of 3-0 defeats.
Kenyon (2-7) came out of the gates strong against Juniata (7-4) in its first action of the day. The Ladies charged out to a 14-7 lead in the first set only to see the Eagles storm back and claim a 25-22 decision. In the second set, Kenyon held its ground and had the score locked up, 14-14, before Juniata uncorked an 11-3 run down the stretch. The Eagles didn't let the Ladies hang around as long in the third set with a convincing 25-11 triumph.
Kenyon showed some of the same fight in the final match of the Invitational against Mount Union (9-3), which ended up a perfect 3-0 on the weekend. The Ladies kept it close in the first before falling, 25-20, but the Purple Raiders ran away with the next two by 25-12 and 25-14 margins.
Juniors
Sierra DeLeon and
Mary Jo Scott led Kenyon's attack with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Sophomore
Hannah Shank facilitated the bulk of their scoring opportunities with 34 assists across the two contests. Junior libero
Bella Stachowski produced 30 digs for the Ladies' defense, but got plenty of help Shank (16) and Scott (14) on that side of the net.
The first North Coast Athletic Conference action of the season is next on Kenyon's schedule. The Ladies are set to clash with Ohio Wesleyan University inside Tomsich Arena Thursday night at 7 p.m.
