GAMBIER, Ohio – With a convincing 3-1 win over Denison University, the Kenyon College field hockey team captured its fourth straight victory and maintained its position at the top of the North Coast Athletic Conference standings. The win pumped Kenyon's overall record to 4-2 and its conference mark to a perfect 4-0.
From the start, the Ladies pounded the Denison zone and rarely let the Big Red escape. Within the game's first three minutes, Kenyon scored. The goal came from freshman
Maddie Breschi, who flipped a shot through traffic and watched it find its way into the right corner of the Denison cage.
Around the 30-minute mark of the first half, Kenyon tallied what turned out to be the game-winner. This time it was sophomore
Julie Freedman who wound up, got some air under her shot, and placed the ball in the upper right corner of the Big Red cage. The goal was her team-leading fourth of the season.
In the second half, another sophomore,
Sammy Johnston, gave Kenyon some more breathing room. She teed off on a ball that was left behind two dueling players. The goal was her third of the season and her shot was one of 16 shots on the day for Kenyon.
Denison, which managed only seven shots, registered its lone goal on a late penalty stroke. Catie Merrick took the stroke for the Big Red (5-2 overall, 3-1 NCAC) and spoiled Kenyon goalkeeper
Sydney Carney-Knisely's bid for a shutout. Despite missing out on that shutout, Carney-Knisely made two saves and improved her personal goalkeeping record to 4-0.
The Ladies are off to their best start to a season since 2008, when they also opened play with a 4-2 record. Next up for the Ladies is a trip to Oberlin College for Saturday's 11 am game with the Yeowomen.
