Kenyon suffers first loss on last-minute goal

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College defense did all it could to keep the Owls in Saturday's field hockey game, but the visiting Maroons from Roanoke College scored a goal with 59 seconds on the clock to escape with a 1-0 non-conference win on The Field at Benson Bowl.

Roanoke (2-3) had the better of the offensive play throughout the game. The Maroons outshot the Owls, 10-2, and built a 6-1 margin in penalty corners.

Kenyon's defense, backed by junior goalkeeper Sofia Chaves, stopped nearly everything the Maroons threw at them. The Owls shut down all six penalty corners and Chaves made eight saves throughout the game. 

Offensively, Kenyon (2-1) struggled to crack through the Maroons. The two shots Kenyon registered, one from Maren Lawrence and the other from Casey Master, were off target, allowing Roanoke goalkeeper Chloe Miller to notch a shutout without making a save.

The difference in the game developed on a play in the left side of the Kenyon zone. Roanoke's Gisele Harris collected the ball just inside the circle and unleashed a back-handed swipe. The ball got airborne as it traveled toward Chaves. Before it got there, however, Merrin Vespucci-Paxson redirected even higher and it glanced off Chaves' blocker before finding its way into the cage with just under a minute left in the game.

Kenyon, which opened the season with three straight road games, will take to the road on Saturday to play at Centre College in a game scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
