Owls open conference with home win

GAMBIER, OHIO - The Kenyon College Owls (2-0, 1-0) launched an outstanding second-half performance to comfortably beat the Washington & Jefferson College Presidents (0-2, 0-1), 8-0. Maren Lawrence, Casey Master, and Piper Morris each netted a pair of goals to contribute to the team's success.

The first half of the game saw little scoring action, however the Kenyon offense was far from invisible. Outshooting the Presidents in the first quarter 10-1, it was only a matter of time before the Owls were able to sneak one in. At the 8:19 mark, Lawrence put Kenyon on the board after the ball had bobbled into the circle and a follow-up to the net meant that the Owls led, 1-0.

Making it 2-0, Lawrence struck again at 35:46 on an Ella Adamec assist to tally another Kenyon goal to the stat line. This opened the scoring floodgates for the Owls. Well under two minutes later, Ada Wigfield would tip one in, extending the lead to 3-0. Wigfield, a senior defender, inserted the ball into the game off of a penalty corner, where Gigi Johnson then picked the ball up and threw a shot towards the goal. Wigfield deflected the ball past the Presidents' goalie and into the back of the net.

Master scored her first of the day, just 22 seconds left in the third quarter, upon receiving the ball off of a penalty corner, which she shot toward the goal. It was saved and deflected back out to her, allowing it to be collected once again and put past the Presidents' goalie, ending the third quarter, 4-0.

At the 48:49 minute mark, Morris added her name into the stat sheet, scoring off of a pass from Adamec. Morris recorded her first collegiate goal and pushed the Owls' score to 5-0. Hendrika Maher snuck a goal in at 50:23 when she followed up her own initial deflected shot. The scoring continued in the last minute and a half of the game as Master, showing off her technical ability and physicality, whacked one in at 58:48. She had another chance to score just 8 seconds left in the game that Morris tipped in for the goal, bringing the total score to 8-0.

The Owls outshot the Presidents 42-1 and forced the Presidents' goalie, Grace Erhard, to make 19 saves.

The Kenyon field hockey team is back in action at Benson Bowl, Sunday, September 13 at 11:00 a.m. as it takes on Roanoke College.
