Owls open season with win at home

GAMBIER, Ohio - The Kenyon College field hockey team opened its 2026 season today with a 2-1 win at home over Concordia University of Wisconsin.

It was a slow start for the Owls as the Falcons controlled most of the first quarter in their offensive third. Concordia struck first just 6:51 into the game when Hannah Lawson passed the ball across the circle and right into the stick of Falcon senior Paige Armijo, who put the ball into the back of the cage, sending the Falcons up 1-0.

The Owl defense continued to fight off a very strong forward line from Concordia for the remainder of the first quarter, battling through seven shots and four penalty corners from the Falcons. Kenyon goalie, Sofia Chaves, made four saves to keep the Owls in the hunt.

Just 1:25 into the second quarter, the Owls offense responded to a Concordia foul in the midfield with sophomore Alexandra Dineen stepping up to send the ball back into play. The ball quickly found Hendrika Maher who went on the run to beat two Concordia defenders and sliced the ball to the lower left corner past Falcon goalie, Carlijn van der Bend. Maher's unassisted goal tied up the game 1-1 going into the third quarter.

The score remained tied with the Owls gaining some offensive momentum and out-shooting the Falcons, 5-1, until senior forward Rigby Zentner scored the game-winning goal at the 6:36 mark of the fourth quarter. The play developed off a Kenyon penalty corner in which Ada Wigfield stepped in to send the ball into the field of play. The ball bounced out into senior midfielder Casey Master's stick who sent the ball to the back post for Zentner to tap in.

The Owls defense, spearheaded by Wigfield, Natalia Aguilar-Ripley, Ariana Rowe, and Olivia Wangerow, would continue to lock down the Concordia offense for the rest of the fourth-quarter. Chaves recorded 10 saves for the Owls, including fending off eight dangerous penalty corners.

The last time these two teams battled each other was in October of 2024 and it ended in a 2-1 loss for Kenyon. This year showed growth and resilience as the Kenyon team was able to claim the win at Benson Bowl, securing new head coach Meridith Thorpe's first program win. Up next for Thorpe and her Kenyon team is a conference home game against Washington and Jefferson College on Tuesday, September 8 at 4:30 pm.
