HIRAM, Ohio – Clinging to a 54-53 lead with 6:16 remaining in Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball game, the host Hiram College Terriers got a huge three-point bucket from Aaron Stefanov and held on for a 74-63 victory over the Kenyon College Lords.
About two-and-a-half minutes after his three-pointer, Stefanov connected on a pair of free throws to give Hiram a 61-54 lead, which was the Terriers' most comfortable cushion since an early 12-5 advantage just six minutes into the game. Down the stretch, Kenyon pulled within six points on a jumper from junior
Ikenna Nwadibia but when Hiram's Alan Sheppard responded with another three-ball with just over 90 seconds left, the game became out of reach for the Lords (7-8, 1-5 NCAC).
Stefanov, who now averages a team-best 15.8 points per game for the Terriers, ended up going 5-of-9 from three-point territory and notched a game-high 23 points. Sheppard chipped in with 14 points and Steve Zivoder went 9-of-10 at the free throw line to finish with 17 points.
Kenyon shot just 36.4 percent from the floor (20-of-55), but managed to put four players in double-digits. Nwadibia led the way with 15 points. Fellow juniors
Julian Pavlin and
Brian Lebowitz both added 11 points and sophomore
John Bray tossed in ten. Nwadibia also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to record his fifth double-double of the season.
Outside of those last six minutes of play, the contest was a close one. Prior to that point, there were seven lead changes and six tied scores. Hiram never led by more than seven points early in the game and the halftime score was knotted up at 31-31.
Kenyon led by as many as four points on four different occasions early in the second half, but it was another Stefanov three-pointer that turned the tide. His successful try with 15:59 left in the game sparked a 7-0 Terriers run and gave Hiram a lead it would not relinquish.
The victory ended a brief two-game losing streak for Hiram (8-7, 2-4 NCAC), while Kenyon has dropped three of its last four and will look to bounce back Wednesday with a home contest against Oberlin College.
