Box Score
LEXINGTON, Va. – Wednesday's start to the two-day Washington and Lee University Invitational did not go as planned for the visiting Kenyon College Lords basketball team. The host Generals used their depth to deliver a 59-53 home win.
While Washington and Lee (6-4) never really ran away from the Lords, its bench outscored Kenyon's 39-13. Generals' freshman Andrew Franz, who ended up coming off the pine to log 27 minutes, was largely responsible for the lopsided numbers. Averaging just 8.1 points per game coming into Wednesday's contest, Franz went 6-of-10 from the floor with a pair of three-pointers and a game-high 16 points. He was the only Washington and Lee player to reach a double-digit scoring mark.
On the other end of the court, just two Kenyon players scored more than ten points and the Lords were held to a season-low output. Juniors
Ikenna Nwadibia and
Brian Lebowitz tossed in 14 and 10 points, respectively. The pair also led Kenyon in rebounding as Nwadibia grabbed nine boards and Lebowitz snared six.
As the final score indicated, neither team fared well with the ball. Both teams shot 37.0 percent overall. Kenyon had 21 turnovers and Washington and Lee had 19.
The Generals maintained an early lead, but Kenyon stayed within five points throughout the first half. With 47 seconds left in that first stanza, sophomore
John Bray converted a layup to pull the Lords within one point. Bray then misfired on his next shot, the final one of the half, and the Generals made it to halftime with a 30-29 lead.
Kenyon (6-6) took its first lead of the game early in the second half. Lebowitz restarted play with a bucket in lane. Junior
Julian Pavlin added a field goal and Nwadibia followed up with a layup that gave Kenyon a 35-30 lead with 18:40 left to play.
The Lords held on to that lead until the Generals put together a small run that tied the game at 39-39 with 13:51. The run didn't end there, however. Washington and Lee scored the next eight points and never allowed Kenyon to get closer than three points the rest of the way.
Kenyon now moves on to play Emory and Henry College tomorrow at 2 p.m., while the Generals will host the University of Mary Washington at 4 p.m.
