Brian Lebowitz struck the last blow for the Kenyon College men's basketball team in a see-saw battle with Emory & Henry College Thursday afternoon. Lebowitz's jumper tickled the twine with five seconds remaining and booked a 68-66 win over the Wasps in the Lords' finale at the Washington & Lee Invitational.
After Lebowitz drained the deciding shot, Emory & Henry managed to toss up one final three-point try. The shot was off the mark, allowing Kenyon (7-6) to survive a wild second half that featured nine ties and five lead changes.
Neither team led by more than three points after halftime and the Wasps last held the advantage by that margin (57-54) with 6:50 to go in the contest. Lebowitz then went on a personal seven-point run, which gave the Lords a 61-60 lead and 5:22 left on the clock. While Emory & Henry knotted the score three more times before the final buzzer sounded, Kenyon did not trail again.
Lebowitz tallied 19 points on 9-of-17 shooting, but classmate
Julian Pavlin was the Lords' leading scorer with a 21-point effort. Pavlin did most of his damage at the free-throw line where he was a perfect 10-for-10. After scoring 28 points over the past two games, Pavlin was named to the W&L Invitational all-tournament team.
Despite the impressive scoring tallies, it was Kenyon's defense which set the tone for the win. The Lords, who took great care of the ball with a scant five turnovers, forced the Wasps into 15 miscues and posted a crucial 16-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
The clash with Emory & Henry (2-7) marked Kenyon's final non-conference contest of the season. The Lords kick off the bulk of their North Coast Athletic Conference schedule Wednesday night at Wittenberg University.
