Box Score
GAMBIER, Ohio – The Denison University Big Red exploited the Kenyon Ladies' defense for five goals, leading to the team's ninth defeat of the season.
Katie Blake and
Marie Laube scored goals for the Ladies, but the effort was too little after Denison scored the first four of the contest. Denison defeated Kenyon by a final count of 5-2.
The goals for Blake and Laube were each player's first of the season, both of which came in the second half. Tuesday's match also marked the first time this season in which the Ladies posted at least one goal and it was not scored by either Becca Romaine or Maggie Smith, though each had their chances against the Big Red.
Blake scored Kenyon's first goal, breaking a streak of four unanswered goals by Denison. After Romaine drew a foul just outside of the top of the box Blake set up for a free kick. She decided to take it herself, putting on a solid strike to the top-far corner of the goal. The goal was scored at 62:11.
Laube's goal halved Denison's lead and gave hope for a potential comeback. Off of a free kick, Kenyon played the ball into traffic out in front of the net but neither team gained clean possession. The loose ball was played forward off of Laube's head and into the goal at 74:39.
Denison's fifth and final goal in the 87th minute sealed the deal for the Big Red, leading to a 5-2 decision.
Andrea Witte of Denison scored twice, once in the 47th minute for the eventual game-winning goal, and again in the 60th minute. She also assisted on the first goal of the game, scored by her teammate Logan Berlet.
Berlet's goal, her sixth of the season, was played up the far side of the field and challenged by a Kenyon defender. Unfortunately, the aggressive play was not rewarded with a stop but instead allowed Witte to play it to the middle of the box where Berlet was waiting to kick it in for an early lead.
The Big Red's second goal was scored only by virtue of an amazing save made by Kenyon's Lauren Wolfe. The initial shot taken by Maddy Regan forced Wolfe to her left where she went airborne and made a diving save. The rebound took an unlucky bounce and Caitlin Cheverine put it home.
The game-winning goal also proved to be a bit of misfortune against the Ladies when Cheverine passed it from the near corner into the middle of the field. The ball skipped past the first offensive option for the Big Red and was acquired and fired by Witte. The goals were her second and third of the season.
Kenyon (3-9-1, 1-3-0) fell victim to the Big Red in shot totals, 17-13, and lost the corner kick advantage, 10-1. Romaine and Smith led the Ladies with five shots, each. They combined for seven shots on goal, accounting for all of Denison goalkeeper Andrea Karl's saves.
The Ladies' next match will be at home against Wittenberg University on Oct. 23 at 4 p.m.
